Mount Kilimanjaro - Rongai Route.
Wilderness Winners Safari specializes in leading treks along the Rongai Route, renowned for its scenic beauty, gentle ascent, and high success rate. Unlike the Machame Route, which is more challenging, or the Marangu Route, where hikers stay in huts, the Rongai Route offers a more intimate experience with overnight stays in tents. Your dedicated porters will set up your tent, and meals are served either under the open sky on a blanket or inside a cozy dining tent.
This less-traveled route begins on the northern side of Kilimanjaro, near the Kenyan border, offering spectacular views from various vantage points. The descent follows the Marangu Route, providing a diverse experience as you traverse the southeast face of the mountain during your summit attempt.

Upon your arrival at either Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport, our team will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Relax, enjoy a delicious dinner, and prepare for the adventure ahead.
After breakfast, you’ll transfer to Rongai Gate, passing through charming wooden villages and fields of maize and potatoes. The trek begins at Rongai Gate (2,150 m), with a gradual ascent through a lush forest teeming with wildlife, including the striking black-and-white Kilimanjaro colobus monkeys. The first campsite, located at the edge of the moorland zone (2,600 m), offers breathtaking views over the Kenyan plains.
The morning starts with a steady ascent to the “Second Cave” (3,450 m), offering spectacular views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields. After lunch, you’ll leave the main trail and head toward the rugged Mawenzi peaks. Camp near Kikelewa Caves (3,600 m) in a sheltered valley with magnificent vistas.
The day begins with a short but steep climb through grassy slopes, rewarded by panoramic views. As you approach Mawenzi Tarn (4,330 m), vegetation begins to disappear, replaced by the stark beauty of the alpine desert. The camp is set beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi, where you’ll have the afternoon free for rest or exploration to aid acclimatization.
Cross the striking lunar landscape of the Saddle, the vast expanse between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail leads to the School Campsite (4,750 m), situated at the base of the Kibo crater wall. Spend the day resting and preparing for the final summit push.
Your summit attempt begins around 1:00 a.m. under a starlit sky. Follow the switchback trail through loose volcanic scree to reach Gillman’s Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim. After a brief rest, continue to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m), the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement as the sun rises over the continent. Descend via Kibo (4,700 m) to Horombo Hut (3,720 m) for the night.
On the final day, descend through the lush moorland and montane forest to Mandara Hut (2,700 m), and then proceed to Mweka Gate (1,830 m). Here, you’ll receive your well-earned certificate of accomplishment before transferring to your hotel in Moshi for a relaxing overnight stay.
